If you’ve climbed into your attic and found loose, pebble-like granules — gray-brown or silvery, a bit like gravel or popped popcorn — that’s likely vermiculite, and it deserves a careful look before you do anything else up there. Vermiculite itself is a harmless mineral. The concern is where a lot of it came from. Here’s what the EPA says, and what to do.
Why is vermiculite insulation a concern?
Vermiculite is a natural mineral that expands into lightweight, fire-resistant granules when heated, which made it a popular loose-fill attic insulation for much of the 20th century. The problem is that a mine near Libby, Montana — which supplied a very large share of the vermiculite used in U.S. homes, sold widely as Zonolite — was contaminated with asbestos. Insulation from that source can contain amphibole asbestos fibers. Because you can’t tell by sight which mine any given batch came from, the EPA advises treating all vermiculite insulation as if it contains asbestos.
How do I know if I have it?
Vermiculite loose-fill looks like small, lightweight, accordion-layered granules poured between the joists, not batts or blown fiberglass. It’s usually gray-brown to silver-gold. If your home was built or insulated before the 1990s and you see loose granular fill in the attic, treat it as suspect. The only way to confirm whether it contains asbestos is laboratory analysis of a properly collected sample — and sampling vermiculite is itself a disturbance, so it should be done by someone equipped to do it without spreading fibers, not by leaning in with a sandwich bag.
Is it dangerous if I don’t touch it?
Risk with asbestos comes from airborne fibers, so vermiculite that is undisturbed and sealed away — for example, sitting in an attic floor you never enter, with no gaps into the living space below — generally poses a lower risk than vermiculite that gets stirred up. The EPA’s practical advice reflects that: the single most protective thing you can do is leave it alone. Don’t store boxes in that attic, don’t let kids play there, and seal cracks and openings (around light fixtures, the attic hatch, ductwork) that could let fibers drift into the home. What changes the picture is any plan that disturbs the material.
What should I NOT do with vermiculite?
Don’t disturb it, don’t sweep or vacuum it with a household vacuum, don’t try to remove it yourself, and don’t add new insulation on top or run a renovation through that attic without addressing it first. Common triggers that turn a quiet attic into a fiber-release event include running new wiring or HVAC, adding recessed lights, converting the attic to storage or living space, or a roof job that vibrates the ceiling. If you’re planning any of those, the vermiculite has to be dealt with before the work — not discovered in the middle of it.
How is vermiculite tested and removed?
Testing means a controlled sample sent to an accredited lab. Removal is a regulated abatement job: the attic is set up as a contained work area with negative air pressure and HEPA filtration, the material is wetted and removed with specialized methods (loose fill can’t simply be swept), workers use decontamination procedures, and the waste is disposed of at a landfill permitted for asbestos. Does all vermiculite insulation contain asbestos?

Can I just cover the vermiculite with new insulation?
