Here’s where hiring an environmental contractor for an attic cleanout really matters.
Many homes insulated from the 1920s through the 1980s used vermiculite — a lightweight, pebble-like, gray-brown or silvery loose-fill insulation. According to the EPA, a large share of the vermiculite insulation sold in the U.S. came from a mine in Libby, Montana that was contaminated with asbestos. The EPA’s guidance is simple: if you have vermiculite insulation, assume it may contain asbestos and do not disturb it.
That means a vermiculite attic is not a DIY cleanout, and it’s not a job for a general junk hauler. Disturbing it can release asbestos fibers into the air your family breathes — and into your HVAC system.

Vermiculite is a loose, pebble-like fill — small, lightweight, gray-brown to silvery-gold flakes that pour rather than roll out in batts. If your home was built or insulated before 1990 and you see material like that, don’t disturb it. Per EPA guidance, treat it as potentially asbestos-containing and have it evaluated first.
