Call: 706-661-0487In 1974, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enacted the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) to establish limits on contaminants in drinking water, ensuring that no adverse health effects are likely to occur. The first method for detecting asbestos in water, known as EPA Method 100.1, was introduced in 1983 under the title “Analytical Method for Determination of Asbestos Fibers in Water” (EPA-600/4-83-043).
By 1992, the EPA set the first maximum contaminant level (MCL) for asbestos in drinking water, mandating that analyses be conducted using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). As a result, EPA Method 100.1 was no longer sufficient to meet the new regulatory requirements. To address this, the EPA issued a memorandum clarifying how EPA Method 100.1 could be used for compliance, and subsequently, in 1994, introduced EPA Method 100.2, titled “Determination of Asbestos Structures Over 10µm in Length in Drinking Water” (EPA/600/R-94/134). This updated method was specifically designed to meet the asbestos standards for drinking water and incorporated quality assurance objectives developed under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA).
Asbestos was officially listed as a contaminant under the Safe Drinking Water Act in 1992 and included in the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWR) in 1995. These regulations are legally enforceable and apply to public water systems. The EPA has set a maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 7 million fibers (greater than 10 microns in length) per liter (MFL). The EPA periodically reviews this standard to ensure it continues to protect human health. It’s important to note that states and local agencies may establish more stringent MCLs for asbestos in drinking water, so it is advisable to consult local authorities before interpreting laboratory results.
